Introduction

Muslims can seek Allah's protection through prayer, Qur'anic recitation, remembrance and authentic supplications. These practices are part of worship and remind us to place our trust in Allah while taking sensible steps to protect ourselves and our families.

The following supplications are reported in the Sunnah. Their meanings are provided in English to help readers understand what they are asking Allah for.

Important: Supplications are acts of worship, not magical formulas or guarantees against every difficulty. Seek Allah's help sincerely, and do not neglect appropriate medical care or other necessary precautions.

1. A Supplication for Morning and Evening

Seeking protection in Allah's name

Bismillahil-ladhi la yadurru ma'asmihi shay'un fil-ardi wa la fis-sama'i, wa huwas-Sami'ul-'Alim.

Meaning: In the name of Allah, with whose name nothing in the earth or the heaven can cause harm, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.

When to recite: Three times in the morning and three times in the evening.

Reference: Sunan Abi Dawud 5088; Jami' at-Tirmidhi 3388. Read in Jami' at-Tirmidhi.

2. Seeking Refuge in Allah's Perfect Words

A supplication for protection from harm

أَعُوذُ بِكَلِمَاتِ اللَّهِ التَّامَّاتِ مِنْ شَرِّ مَا خَلَقَ

A'udhu bi kalimatillahit-tammati min sharri ma khalaq.

Meaning: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah from the evil of what He has created.

When to recite: This supplication is reported for seeking protection when staying at a place. A related authentic report mentions reciting it in the evening to seek protection during the night.

Reference: Sahih Muslim 2708–2709.

3. Surah Al-Ikhlas, Al-Falaq and An-Nas

Three chapters for seeking Allah's protection

Recite Surah Al-Ikhlas (Qur'an 112), Surah Al-Falaq (Qur'an 113) and Surah An-Nas (Qur'an 114). These chapters teach belief in Allah's oneness and seeking His refuge from evil.

Authentic narrations describe reciting these three chapters three times in the morning and evening. Another narration describes the Prophet ﷺ reciting them before sleeping, blowing lightly into his hands and wiping over the parts of his body he could reach.
